Less than two hours drive by car or bus from New York City, the Cottekill church and house is also minutes from some of the best the countryside has to offer. The Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska State Park, and the Ashokan Reservoir are all short drives away and offer some of the finest hiking and rock climbing on the east coast. The rail trail to Kingston can be picked up just a quarter of a mile away for miles of walking, running, and biking, and the Wallkill Valley Trail is also very close.
Three miles to charming shops, antique stores, and restaurants in High Falls, Stone Ridge and Rosendale. An independent, collectively owned theater is in Rosendale and nearby college town, New Paltz, is home to many cultural activities because of SUNY New Paltz and its Huguenot history. The area was settled in the late 1600′s by the Dutch so many stone houses are in the area, many of which can be found in nearby Kingston, the first capital of New York state.
Davenport’s Farm Stand is just 3 minutes down the road (lovely doughnuts), plus other farmer’s markets are in nearby Rosendale, New Paltz and Kingston, as well as numerous CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) for a supply of fresh, local produce.
Five minutes to the grocery store, 20 minutes to the big box stores, 45 minutes to the Stewart Newburgh airport, and two hours to major NYC airports. Come home afterward to see cardinals, woodpeckers, chickadees, and nut hatches among a host of birds at the bird feeders against the kitchen window.
